Red Abalone are indigenous to the coastline of California, and in keeping with California tradition, they are the biggest variety available on the planet. Just like their not at all related neighbors, the California Redwood, Red Abalone take the prize for being the largest, and, unfortunately for them, most sought-after variety of their kind. This is not because they are so pretty, although their shells are beautiful, but because their meat content is proportionately higher, and the taste more pleasant, than many other varieties.
For these reasons and many more, including pollution and competition for food sources from that scoundrel the sea urchin, Red Abalone populations have been worn down to a trickle in recent decades. Not too long ago, it is said, one might not-too-irregularly witness a beach party where participants merely needed to wade into nearby tide pools to pull out more than enough Red Abalone for all to consume. Not so anymore, but through education and conservation, Red Abalone populations are making a slight comeback in some areas.
