The world has seen ups and downs and many serious setbacks to the wholesale abalone industry. The downs have been mostly the direct result of demands placed on the natural populations of abalone by the wholesale market itself, which, unfortunately, like most world markets has historically put profits and immediate gain ahead of the need for a sustainable fishing policy and conservation-minded market practices.
Nowadays smart-minded and forward-thinking wholesale abalone businesspeople are supporting long term process’ that will help to maintain and rebuild the world’s fisheries. This includes mariculture, which allows wholesale abalone to be sold in high volume without gutting natural populations, which have been all but decimated in some areas. Only recently, since conservation efforts and governmental restrictions have forced the wholesale abalone business to be more responsible have some species been able to make a slight comeback.
